You must know what you are getting when you go here. It is a family-style restaurant with down-home food...comfort food! The starters are simple but delicious...I could have eaten a lot more of the basics! The pan-fried chicken was nothing remarkable, but the steak was fabulous. The restaurant is an old house, so the rooms are small/quaint and you feel as though you should keep your voices down. Overall, my kids loved the food, which is a definite plus with picky eaters, and my husband and I enjoyed the experience.

This place is amazing, nothing like hommeade grub after shreddin gnar pow all day! The chicken is great and the creamed corn is better! The wait staff is alot of fun as well, cheers!

Slogar is a unique gem in Crested Butte that many tourists may miss since it's not directly on the main drag (Elk ave). If you're into southern comfort food, this place is calling you home. It's fried chicken (or steak) with all the fixings, but honestly, my favorite is their warm biscuits with honey butter. Does life get any better than that?

Didn't care for it. Tough, underseasoned fried chicken. Mostly lousy sides, esp. the mashed potatoes (exceptions - liked the honey butter and the tomato chutney). Way overrated, IMO.

This place won my vote as favorite restaurant in Crested Butte. Pan-fried chicken served family-style with biscuits, mashed potatoes, home-made cole slaw and other extras I don't recall. Very filling and friendly. Building used to be the first bar along the return road from the mines back in the day and they have great historic pictures hanging throughout the restaurant. Be sure to call for reservations; however, we got a group of 9 in without.

COME HUNGRY! everything (except the fried chicken and steak) is all you can eat. potatoes, coleslaw, cottage cheese, corn...all delicious! and i love finishing off the meal with coffee spooned onto my ice cream. mmmmmm! TIP: an order of friend chicken comes with four pieces so you can order a vegetarian or two if you think you wont be able to eat all that chicken and save a few $$.

This place serves up some amazing chicken. I grew up in Georgia so I have a fairly high standard when it comes to traditional American (particularly of the southern variety) cuisine. The chicken is awesome and while there are some stand out additions the majority of the food is fairly standard. We came with a huge crew (9 of us) and because one of my friends made a reservation we were seated in a fantastic little dining room right off the kitchen away from the crowds which definitely made the meal a lot more fun. We essentially had our own room to be as loud and boisterous about our love of biscuits as possible. Being with good friends hobbled around a dining table is really what made this meal a lot of fun. Service was also really nice. Our waitress was very nice, easy-going, and ensured our drinks and sides were in plentiful quantities. The night was great... so why not 5 stars? First, I'd classify this more as a buffet style dinner than a family style dinner. It's all you can eat sides and your choice of steak or chicken. This could be amazing if the sides were good but they were mixed. The apps are straight up weird: 1) cottage cheese and 2) coleslaw which is supposedly modeled after some PA-based slaw (you can call anything modeled after but if it isn't good... it isn't good). The tomato chutney was pretty solid though... I just wish I had something other than cottage cheese and flavorless slaw to pair it with (the pickled veggies are meh...). The chicken is the stand out and while the biscuits and the preserves are out of this world good... they are torn down by so-so mashed potatoes (the easiest thing to make amazing in reality) and some kind of "cream corn" that is essentially frozen corn mixed with milk. The cream corn I grew up around couldn't be separated... this I strained with a spoon. I love what they're doing and they have an amazing heritage to pull from. At the same time, some things could use a refresh. This place is an amazing value- there is no denying that. If you walk away hungry than there is something wrong with you. If they added a peach cobbler at the end for a few more dollars and touched up the cream corn (or made corn bread with it) than this place would be an absolute go-to spot in Crested Butte. I would ask for a vegetable but I don't think that's the point of going here.

The food was delicious and the wait staff was very friendly. Awesome place. One note: you will leave stuffed with amazing food so make sure you come hungry. We had no complaints at all.

Our meal was fantastic! The fried chicken was sick and the biscuits were amazing. Loved the starters and friendly service. Definitely come here hungry as you will leave here stuffed.

The food was OK. The chicken wasn't seasoned and the steak was over cooked. I thought it was odd that for 2 people they added auto gratuity (20%), and then taxed the entire bill (including the auto-grat.) (we always tip 20%) The service was significantly slower after our drinks came. I asked the waitress why there was gratuity added for 2 people and her response was 'there were 2 girls that called in tonight and I'm doing a horrible job, so I don't think I should be punished because there's not enough staff, I'm adding that to everyone's check'. I think my jaw hit the floor. While this place may be a tourist trap, my recommendation is to skip it.

The food here was absolutely amazing! Everything was prepared fresh and made with love. The portions were amazingly large. I have nothing bad to say about this restaurant. They are known for there fried chicken and second their steak. Do not expect a menu either. Sorry colonial sanders but these guys would put you out if business!

Neat victorian themed place with good chicken and sides. I thought the sides (a bit weird, but good) might deserve 4 stars, but the chicken was just 'average'. At a number of places near home I can get better chicken for about $7/person including sides so I found Slogar to be a bit overpriced even considering the superior presentation and location in CB. I had no idea what the price was until we received our bill, which made me a bit uncomfortable. I suppose they may be catering more towards wealthy skier types than regular vacationers. I also wasn't fond of the server automatically adding a 20% gratuity to our small group of 4. She did a good job, but it put me off that she took it upon herself to make sure we recognized her effort. It was good, but I would probably try some other places in CB before returning to Slogar.

This was a solid hit restaurant. The food is served family style and the restaurant is set in an old house (very quaint). The fried chicken is absolutely INCREDIBLE and very moist (high praise from a Southern girl). The biscuits were also very good and the honey butter was delicious. We would definitely go back!

The biscuits with honey butter is the best thing ever! After putting a huge slab of the honey butter on my biscuit like a true southern gal, the bread totally melted in my mouth. I could just sit there and eat that and completely forget about the fried chicken and the other sides. This is not to say that the chicken and the other sides are not good. The chicken is juicy, the mash potatoes buttery, the corn creamy, the coleslaw crispy, and the ice cream vanilla-y. I personally am not into cottage cheese, so that was my least favorite side. At first I was a little disturbed by $16 per person for fried chicken, but after seeing how much food they give you, I guess it's acceptable. You can also order take-out: same price, but without the ice cream. I purposely ordered take-out on a night that my roommate was away, so she won't see how primitive I become when I use my hands to eat fried chicken. 1 star off: the cottage cheese looked like gross discharge from a certain human orifice, yuck...

I am not exaggerating. This place is the Chuck e Cheese of Fried Chicken joints. They obviously cater to children, (place was filled with families) because they have succeeded in making the chicken tasteless, dry and bland, along with the mashed potatoes and gravy. The "creamed corn" is corn kernels swimming in what appeared to be plain watery 2% milk. If all you claim to be is a fried chicken restaurant and can't do that right, too bad. Bypass this place and save your money, there are many other good restaurants in Crested Butte, Like Soupcon etc....

My husband has come here since he was a kid, and has so many fond memories of this place. He warned me that the menu didn't have many choices, but we didn't realize until we sat down with our kids that there was one choice (fried chicken with all the sides) for $16 or you could pay $10 more for steak. No discount for kids on steak, $26 per person...That's it - you choose chicken or steak. Everything else is already decided for you. Needless to say, we had the chicken. It was WONDERFUL!!! The meal started with a relish tray, cottage cheese and tomato chutney. The pears on the relish tray were sweet and cinnamon-y - so delicious. I wouldn't normally eat that as a starter, but we were hungry and it was very good. Then came the good stuff: pan fried chicken, glorious creamed corn, mashed potatoes with homemade chicken gravy - and the best biscuits you've ever tasted - SO YUMMY! The next time we visit Crested Butte (and there WILL be a next time!) I will definitely return to Slogar.

No way you can't come here while visiting crested butte!! They do family style dinners which means you get all you can eat sides!! Our waitress was absolutely the sweetest most personable waitress I've ever had! She even gave us a tour of the building which is over 100 years old!! And the food... It was like grandma herself was in the kitchen!! Amazing!!!

I am from the Florida Keys and this place is in no comparison to southern Florida cooking in my opinion. I would prefer a nice sirloin of the grill and it will still be better. But other wise the food is good but not even close to food back home in the keys

Okay, so I should have known something was up when I reviewed the menu and noticed that they do not list the price of their dinner items. Small details, like listing the price on the menu, make me feel much more comfortable when ordering dinner. We didn't realize that the chicken dinner was $18/pp and the rib eye $30. No big deal, we expected dinner to be a bit more in a mountain resort. The appetizers were good. Personally, I would never think to pair cottage cheese and coleslaw with tomato chutney, but it was really good. Three stars for the apps. For dinner I had the rib eye, my wife the chicken. My ribeye was overcooked...minus one star. My wife's chicken was bland...minus one star. The biscuits were good...plus one star. The rest of the meal was just...well...mehhh. I would probably give this place a higher rating, but we noticed that at the end of our evening, when we finally received the bill, that the waitress charged us 20% gratuity, then taxed us on the meal and the gratuity. Not too sure how taxation works, but I'm pretty sure they shouldn't tax on tips. When we asked the waitress why she automatically added gratuity, she said that she was short staffed and knew she was providing poor service, but she wanted to guarantee that she received a good tip at the end of the night. I expect you to automatically charge gratuity on large parties, but not on a group of two. The tip I should have left, had I not been assessed an auto charge, is..."if you want a good tip, do a good job. Suck it up, buttercup".

Make reservations. The only problem we experienced here is that we arrived here without reservations and the hostess seemed disgusted we would do this. Her tone and look could not have shown this more. Another party of two arrived after us without reservations also and was seated before us. Chicken and biscuits were delicious and it was a nice treat to take home the left overs on the table. Our waitress was top notch! Attentive and really really friendly. I am not sure what another reviewer was referring to but we were also a party of 2 and had a few beers and our bill was only $60 and we left our own tip. I think this restaurant is a great little Crested Butte find.

Wanted to go to Maxwell's Steakhouse for dinner, but it was closed for a private party. Our hotel suggested Slogar as a second choice. When we got in, we saw it was a cute little restaurant in a cute mountain town and I was excited. What everyone failed to mention was that there is only steak and friend chicken on the"menu". No prices. Food was mediocre - definitely NOT worth the $70 that was paid for two people. Half of the meal was wasted because they won't let you take home anything other than the chicken and biscuits. You couldn't even pick sides. You just got what they gave you. There was a family of 15 that allowed their annoying children to scream and run up and down the dining room (not the restaurant's fault, but added to my annoyance). Fast forward to the end. Super expensive and not satisfied AT ALL. After reading the other comments, I didn't even notice if they charged us for a 20% tip/tax, because I tipped separately (not 20% either). Double check your bill if you go, I guess! Like everyone else is saying, there are WAY better restaurants in CB. Do not go here!!

We really enjoyed our dining experience here. Everyone was very friendly and the place has a lot of history. The owner was working and took the time to explain a little about the history of the building. I always like it when the owner is present and mingles with the guests. You don't see this often any more. The food was very good. The fried chicken was old fashioned southern style. Not too greasy. You do need to make reservations. I thought $18 per person for appetizer, main course, dessert and beverage was very reasonable. The only reason that I didn't give a 5, is because I rarely do that. I highly recommend you try Slogars while in CB

I can't believe I waited so long to try Slogar. I have heard good things for many years but people didn't really do it justice with their descriptions. My wife and I took some friends to CB with us recently and I decided to give it a shot. Here's the bottom line: This is comfort food at its best! You already know that your choices are fried chicken and steak. You also know the sides based on other reviews. What you don't know (if you haven't been there before) is that the food is wonderful and the service is down-home friendly. Our group shared both of the meat choices and we still could not eat it all. It was actually a little seductive listening to the ladies make romantic noises after every bite of food! That made for a great date night! The atmosphere is cozy and the staff was wonderful. I even got a kick out of the pull-chain toilet in the men's water closet. Needless to say, we thoroughly enjoyed the evening and continue to talk about it. This is now on my list of favorites eateries in my favorite ski town!

I have been a long time supporter of this restaurant and tonight I'm disappointed to say that I will never be back. I started at slogar's as a baby whenever visiting Crested Butte and have been back once a season since. I took my girlfriends here tonight for some family fun during our girls weekend and not only did we receive the worst service but we physically saw our waitress, Dannee, talk about us. They we're not accommodating to my allergies, nor to my vegetarian friend. I usually rave about service in this town and I wont ever send any family member, friend, or worst enemy to eat at this place. I hope this recommendation encourages a change.

Great service and fried chicken & sides are just what you want in home cookin'. Good for families as well although I wouldn't have wanted to be the romantic couple sitting next to our crew. ;)

We had several recommendations to try Slogar, so decided to try it for our last evening in town. We were not let down in any way. The fried chicken was beyond great and the sides were perfect supporting roles for an awesome dinner experience. The chicken was tender and juicy, and perfectly cooked. The mashed potatoes and creamed corn were flavorful. And the ice cream at the end was just the right way to end a perfect meal. Everyone at our table, adults and kids alike, were happy and full.

Best use of a yard bird. Family style with amaze ball sides, pickled pears and tomato chutney over cottage cheese. Real mashed potatoes. Like my Aunt Betty made every Sunday. This is the real deal.

Slogars is set up right in downtown CB in an old family home. Real cozy and it has several old family pictures around the restaurant/house. The food is served family style. They start with cinnamon pears, pickles, carrots, celery, coleslaw, and cottage cheese, From there they bring out the famous pan cooked fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, and the rolls. Then they bring out a scoop of ice cream and chocolate drizzle syrup. I can't speak highly enough about the quality of the food and the service!!!!!

I am no expert but I have eaten here a couple of times and recommend this highly if you are visiting Crested Butte. Here is the story: family style fried chicken served with mashed potatoes, gravy, biscuits...the works. Everything is amazing! The cost is about what it should be at about 18 to 20 bucks per person with drink , dinner and desert. This is what you would spend anywhere else in town. Here you get refills on the food so to me this is a no brainer! Great food!

The best fried chicken in Colorado by a long shot! And it's so easy to eat here. Just show up, order chicken (or steak if you don't like fried chicken which is weird), and enjoy the multi course, family style spread that is brought out. Great cole slaw and some other starters, awesome biscuits with jam, chicken of course, and ice cream. A perfect meal after a day outside.

Southern comfort in Crested Butte. Fun large group dining experience - they also do to-go, however, I've heard horror stories of all the sides running into each other and becoming a weird mixture of blah. The chicken is on point. The mashed potatoes are endless and delicious. The biscuits and honey-butter will leave you wanting more. Make a reservation and go hungry!

We have been going to SLogars for many years all the way from Durango. Went there for an overnight specifically to enjoy our favorite Crested Butte restaurant. Sadly the price for the chicken dinner has increased to 23 dollars an also sadly the chicken was grossly over cooked. The potatoes and gravy and other pre dinner things were still excellent. The restaurant is showing it's age and is in need of updating. Sadly we probably will no longer make the trip.

Everyone in my group raved about the food. Slogar's has been on my list of Crested Butte restaurants to try for over a year. Many of the best CB restaurants require reservations during the winter and summer seasons. We planned ahead and went with 10 people (6 adults and 4 kids). We were given the large rear room for our party which gave us privacy and we didn't have to bother others with our kids talking. The menu is straightforward - fried chicken or steak - with sides of mashed potatoes, creamed corn, biscuits with gravy, honey butter or strawberry jam. All the food was delicious. We will definitely return.

Love the chicken and biscuits. Sides are ok to good. Enjoy getting homemade ice cream and coffee as dessert. Our service was atrocious this last time. Completely ignored after they brought our food. Really tainted our experience, but still will come back for the food.

Slogar is a very cute Western-Victorian chicken dinner spot. They also offer rib-eye, but are really known for the chicken. They provide a relish tray with cole slaw and cottage cheese to start, then fried chicken, mashed potatoes, creamed corn, biscuits and gravy. Ice cream to finish. Our party of four ordered four chicken dinners and two bottles of wine and the total was $135, which I thought was very fair (esp. for a ski-town on Dec. 30). The service, food and vibe are good--we will go again, it's a fun place.

Amazing food! Probably the most interesting ordering style restaurant I've ever been to. They serve one thing, fried chicken. You sit down and the food just starts to show up. There are about 5 appetizers, then the main course. Fried chicken, biscuits, mashed tatters, cream corn, and so much more.. This is a must do! Eat here!!!
